 Continuity editing is when you combine one or two shots and its creates diagetic worlds

Master shots usually set the scene and location and sometimes the characters 

Dissolve transitions connote passing of time and changing of locations 

Continuity editing is designed to be invisible 

Non continuity disrupts diabetic effect and the chronology of the story 

Continuity editing techniques

- Flash back is an alteration of story order in which the plot moves back to show events that have taken place earlier in the story 

- Flash forward is an alteration of story order in which the plot presentation moves forwards to further events

Split screen is where image is split into different sections, often used to show parallel citron instead of cross cutting

Breaking the fourth wall (Verfremdungseffect) is where characters in films break the diegetic effect by directly addressing the audience and drawing the spectator's attention to the fact that they are watching a film. Its a theatrical term.

soviet filmmaker who pioneered the ideas of montage that were later developed 

Montage is a French word for edit, is a process where the film is built up from the basic raw footage 

Metric-cutting based purely on the length of the shot 

Match cut is where objects which appear similar are used in successive shots sometimes to imply a link, often used as transitions ton connote a change of time or location
